7/27-7/31 Afternoon - Portland Summer Camp: Bricks & Bots
Bricks & Bots: LEGO® AI Adventures Camp
Kids build robots. Then they teach them to think.
This week-long camp shows young learners how artificial intelligence actually works by letting them create it themselves. Using LEGO® bricks and beginner coding platforms, campers build models that respond to sensors, make decisions, and solve problems. We start simple. How does a voice assistant know what you're saying? Why can some robots sort objects by color? How does a self-driving car know when to stop? Kids explore these questions by programming LEGO® creations that do the same things. Each day brings a new challenge. One day campers might build a robot that reacts to touch sensors. Another day they'll create a sorting system that recognizes patterns. By Friday, they're designing their own AI-inspired inventions.
What kids learn:
How code tells machines what to do
Basic AI concepts: inputs, outputs, patterns, decision-making
Building and programming LEGO® models
The engineering process: plan, build, code, test, fix, improve
Working in teams to solve real problems
Thinking like an engineer (and having fun doing it)
Younger kids focus on foundational coding with guided builds. Older students tackle more complex programming challenges and open-ended projects. Everyone works at their level. We also talk about AI responsibly. What's fair? What's not? When should humans make decisions instead of machines? These conversations matter. By the end of camp, every kid leaves with something they built and programmed themselves. More importantly, they see technology as something they can create, not just consume. No coding experience needed. Just bring curiosity and a willingness to experiment.
